17u Championship Recap: Day 1

Jordan Posway
The PG Super25 17u National Championship is underway! Twenty teams gathered in Fort Myers, Florida, with eyes on the National Championship trophy. Here’s a game-by-game recap of the action from day one:

Marucci-Lemoine started the 17u National Championship on a high note with two wins over Team Wilson-Red and CBA 17u Team DTB. Brant Garrett starred in Marucci-Lemoine’s 9-1 win over Team Wilson, tossing five strong innings and allowing one earned run. Marucci pulled away in the fifth inning with a six-run outburst. In their ensuing match-up against CBA, Marucci-Lemoine gradually clawed their way out of a four-run deficit thanks to timely hits and three shut-down innings courtesy of Todd Gauthe. He surrendered one hit in three innings which laid the groundwork for Marucci-Lemoine’s 8-6 comeback victory.

Marucci Lemoine’s counterparts, Marucci-Raley, split their two games against Lenny Webster’s Catch42 and the Sportica Sox. Rodregas Jenkins powered Catch42 to victory with three singles and as many RBIs. Catch42 survived Marucci’s late rally 8-6. Marucci-Raley redeemed themselves in their next game against the Sportika Sox. Christian Leonard, Brock Anderson, and Trey Morgan homered in their team’s 10-3 thrashing of the Sox.

The Orlando Assault topped the Ninth Inning Royals 3-2 in a seven inning nail-biter. Although their offense was limited to one inning, the Assault made the most of their opportunity. A two-run single by Angel Fernandez kick-started the Assault’s second inning surge.

The Cangelosi Blacksox stomped SBO Florida 11-1 with nine runs in the final two innings. SBO Florida got on the board first courtesy of a wild pitch, but the Blacksox never looked back after a two-run single in the second inning by Andrew Rodriguez.

Kragen Kechely was dominant from the mound as the Austin Banditos-Salazar edged the East Cobb Astros 2-0. Kechely allowed no runs and struck out seven in a complete game effort. Christopher Adams’ fifth inning bomb put the game on ice. The Astros’ counterparts, the East Cobb Braves, suffered an opening day defeat as well. FTB Sarasota’s Jordan Ely and Josh Boynge teamed up for nine strikeouts in seven solid innings as their team bested the Braves 4-1.
