Florida State 3, College of Charleston 2

The evening game in the Tallahassee region was a marquee matchup between College of Charleston and Florida State. Both teams won in walk-off fashion on Friday and looked to continue rolling on Saturday. Both starting pitchers, Brandon Glazer of CofC and FSU’s Boomer Biegalski, settled in right away and turned this game into a well played pitchers duel.

The Seminoles got on the board first by plating two runs in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a RBI single from the hot-hitting Josh Delph, and then another on a well struck single back up the middle from FSU’s stud outfielder D.J. Stewart. The two runs would hold up until the eighth inning when the Cougars’ Alex Pastorious ripped a double into the left-center field gap and was immediately followed by a long home run to left field from Carl Wise to tie the game at two. It was a tough blow for Biegalski who pitched a fantastic game.

Florida State wasted no time regaining the lead as sophomore first baseman Quincy Nieporte homered to left in the bottom half of the eighth to give the Seminoles a 3-2 lead that they would not relinquish. FSU turned to senior lefthander Billy Strode to close things out in the ninth and he answered the call by throwing a clean 10 pitch inning to finish things off.

College of Charleston faces Auburn on Sunday in an elimination game while the Seminoles await the winner of that game hoping to advance to the Super Regionals with a win.

Notable Prospects:

Florida State

Boomer Biegalski
– Tall and skinny, Biegalski knows what he can and can’t do on the mound. Showing good arm speed, his fastball sits in the 86-90 mph range without a whole lot of movement, so he relies on his secondaries to set things up for him. The 6-foot-2 righty mixes in a 74-77 mph breaking ball and a very deep and deceptive changeup in the 76-78 range. The key to his game is his ability to throw strikes with all of his pitches and his willingness to throw any one of them to any batter in any count. He really does a good job with his sequencing and is constantly disrupting opposing hitters’ timing. Biegalski also had the ability to miss bats with his entire arsenal. He would lull guys to sleep with his spin and off-speed, and then elevate a fastball right by batters. His changeup was getting very good depth before falling off the table and getting bats to swing right over them. Pitchability is the name of his game, and in 7 2/3 innings he allowed only five hits, the two earned runs on the home run by Wise and one walk while striking out eight Cougar batters.

College of Charleston

Nick Pappas –
Pappas has a wide stance that keeps him balanced. His load is very quiet and he showed pretty solid pitch recognition skills the past two days, but can sometimes get too selective. He gets the bat into the zone quickly and efficiently without a lot of wasted movement. There is power to all fields in his bat, but all weekend his in-game power was all pull-side, including his deep home run to right-field on Friday and a rocket shot double into right field against FSU on Saturday. In the field Pappas has pretty soft hands at first base and shows some nice athleticism. He moves well going to his right and showed a good feel for picking balls out of the dirt during infield practice.

Auburn 1, Mercer 0

Saturday marked the first elimination game in the Tallahassee regional between Mercer and Auburn. Both teams lost heartbreakers on Friday, in walkoff fashion to College of Charleston and Florida State respectively. There wasn't much offense today as both pitching staffs kept their opposition at bay by scattering singles all day and relying on their defenses to make plays behind them.

Mercer started Eric Nyquist who went three innings and gave up only two hits but walked three before being relieved by Morgan Pittman. Pittman was solid as well, but gave up the lone run on the day.

Auburn got its spark from the bench when they called on Jordan Ebert to pinch hit in the bottom of the sixth. Ebert delivered a well-hit single into left-center field before stealing second, advancing to third on a Sam Gillikin single and then scoring on a Blake Logan sac fly. That was all Auburn would need for the win.

Tigers starter Rocky McCord did his job by pitching 6 2/3 of shutout ball allowing six hits, walking two and striking out three before Keegan Thompspn came on in relief and closed the door for good. Thompson got a seven-out save while waking two and striking out a pair as well. Auburn will play another elmination game against the College of Charleston on Sunday.
