Perfect Game Junior College Top 25: April 12

The past week was loaded with some very big statement wins from a variety of teams around the country. Teams who looked like they were starting to fade as the postseason approaches proved to still be very much alive, and the teams who have been at the top of our rankings all season continued to show why they were ranked so highly from day one.

The new No. 1-ranked team, San Jacinto (34-8) was arguably the strongest team on paper heading into the season and the Gators have backed up that argument with their on-field play. While their pitching has been downright dominating all season behind Devin Smeltzer, Montana Parsons and Colton Schmidt, San Jac has just as much skill at the plate and team depth that would make any coach jealous.

Right fielder and cleanup hitter Max Wood, who is currently uncommitted, has put up a .410/.469/.525 slash and leads the team with 57 hits. Shortstop Brandon Montgomery can fill up a box score in a hurry. The Miami commit is hitting .362/.385/.546 while chipping in four home runs, 24 stolen bases and 33 runs. This team is deep and can beat you in many different ways as coach Tom Arrington has his squad playing great baseball and they looked poised for a deep run to Grand Junction next month.

The rest of the top 5 has the same familiar names. Santa Fe (37-6) still holds it down in the second spot while former top ranked LSU-Eunice (40-3) drops to third after losing two of three to Delgado over the weekend. Central Arizona (40-8) and Chipola (36-11) round things out and remain in fourth and fifth respectively.

There is a new team cracking the Top 10 this week with Neosho County (41-6). The team flew under the radar early on but has been extremely impressive all season and shows no signs of slowing down. One guy who has not been flying under the radar has been freshman Brylie Ware. This kid has been putting up video game numbers and as it stands today, he’s sitting on a .587/.676/1.174 slash. Yes, you read that correctly. Ware has smacked 22 homers and 103 RBI in only 47 games. Not to mention he has drawn 26 walks while only striking out 10 times. Have yourself a season, Mr. Ware. Catcher Ryan Tolliver is also sitting on a batting average over .500 with his .527 mark with 11 dingers. That’s a 1-2 punch that should strike fear into any opponent.

Winning baseball in Illinois isn’t reserved only for Chicago this year. John A. Logan (33-7) and Heartland (27-7) have been lighting it up in the Land of Lincoln and these teams sit 11th and 12th in this week’s ranking.

Right on their heels in 13th spot is Santa Rosa (26-4) from California. Santa Rosa is the biggest riser this week by moving up 10 spots and is coming off a huge 11-2 win over San Joaquin Delta.

Rounding out the top 15 is Spartanburg Methodist (35-15) who had a nice series win over conference rival USC Sumter over the weekend and moved into first place in their conference, and Seminole State (30-9) from Oklahoma moves up four spots after taking three of four from 16th ranked Connors State (34-7).

The action is heating up with the weather and things are really starting to get interesting as we approach the last couple of weeks of April. Perfect Game will continue to update the rankings on a weekly basis from here on out, so please come back next Tuesday to see what the world of JUCO baseball has in store.
