Beau Burrows has been somewhat of a quiet prospect this spring, which isn't altogether a bad thing. In Burrows case it implies that he's been healthy and throwing similarly with how he threw last summer and fall when he was one of the most well seen and most consistent pitchers on the travel circuit.

The Texas righthander has always been able to throw hard. He topped out at 96 mph coming out of his sophomore year at the 2013 16u WWBA National Championship and has pretty much been 93-96 mph at every national event since then.

But Burrows has taken huge strides since then as a pitcher. He's toned up his body and is much more mature physically. He's also calmed down his mechanics and effort with the resultant effect of having better command of all his pitches. Burrows used to be a pitcher you would worry about running up high pitch counts by missing up in the zone frequently with his fastball and burying his big 12-to-6 downer curveball. He proved last summer pitching in several high leverage games with the EvoShield Canes and has continued this spring to show that his command should be solid moving forward in his career. He's also developed a mid-80s changeup that is a solid third pitch.

One scout this spring compared the PG All-American to Mike Mussina due to Burrows' delivery and close to over-the-top arm slot. A better comparison from the very recent past might be the Dodgers 2014 first round pick (22nd overall), Grant Holmes. Holmes has a lower arm slot than Burrows which creates a different plane on his power breaking ball, but the two are very similar in both their overall stuff and in their general physical makeup. Twenty-second overall also seems like a very reasonable place in the 2015 draft for teams to seriously consider Burrows.
