Junior College Top 25: March 24

California’s San Joaquin Delta College continues to be the talk of the junior-college baseball world with its unblemished record. The Mustangs extended their mark on the 2015 season to 26-0, through games of April 4, to solidify their place atop Perfect Game’s ranking of the nation’s Top 25 junior colleges.

With a team ERA of 1.83 and .173 opponent batting average, Delta has been propelled by dominant pitching—chiefly freshman lefthander Cameron Avila-Leeper, a 29
th-round draft pick of the Minnesota Twins a year ago who has gone 9-0, 1.82 and leads the state with 75 strikeouts in 64 innings.

Delta coach Reed Peters, however, believes the difference-maker in his team’s stunning success to date has been its defense. It was exemplary again in his club’s latest win, a 7-0 victory over Sierra JC.

Those guys come up with those plays all year," Peters said. "It's fun to watch them play, they're unbelievable. I've said all year the middle of our defense is really good, behind the plate, at short and in center. Those guys have saved us a ton of runs."

Led by San Joaquin Delta, the top four teams in PG’s Top 25 remain the same as two weeks ago, with two Florida schools, St. Johns River (36-6) and Chipola (31-8), anchored at 2-3, and Kansas’ Cowley County (33-2) at No. 4. Fast-charging Walters State (37-5), has moved to No. 5 on the strength of its own 26-game winning streak.

Six new teams joined the rankings this week, led by Oklahoma’s Connors State (26-5), and California’s Orange Coast (19-9), which handed San Joaquin Delta its last loss—in the championship game of the 2014 California state tournament—on its way to a national No. 1 ranking.
