26. Texas A&M

Head Coach: Rob Childress
Conference: Southeastern
2016 Record: 49-16 (20-10 SEC)
2016 Finish: College Station Super Regional

For the second consecutive year the Aggies enjoyed a huge season in the SEC, but have now lost twice to in-state rival TCU in Super Regional play, once in Fort Worth (2015) and again at home (2016). Head Coach Rob Childress will have a very deep stable of arms to turn to during the 2017 season, led by staff ace Brigham Hill (9-2, 2.51 ERA in 2016), but will have to replace nearly the entire starting lineup which includes 2016 SEC Player of the Year Boomer White. Righthanders Mitchell Kilkenny, Turner Larkins and Stephen Kolek are expected to be the starters behind Hill and all could be poised for breakout seasons. Keep an eye on freshman second baseman Braden Shewmake, who could make a huge impact from Day 1 as the team's leadoff hitter, and closer Corbin Martin, who has arguably the livest arm of any pitcher in the SEC.

27. Virginia

Head Coach: Brian O’Connor
Conference: Atlantic Coast
2016 record: 33-22 (19-11 ACC)
2016 finish: Charlottesville Regional

Virginia has more than a hole or two to fill this season as their starting catcher, shortstop and Friday night arm from a season ago have jumped to the pro ranks, but if we’ve learned anything from the Cavaliers in the last couple of seasons it would be not to count them out. Virginia does return one of the most dynamic and well-polished bats in all of college baseball in first baseman Pavin Smith, a true two-way talent in Adam Haseley who hit .304 last spring while going 9-3 with a mere 1.73 ERA, and a fascinating player with fast-twitch Ernie Clement who seems to find the barrel as frequently as anybody. Including the three-man weekend staff, Virginia could start as many as six sophomores and that youth shouldn’t be underestimated as they’re big, athletic and very talented.

28. Sam Houston State

Head Coach: Matt Deggs
Conference: Southland
2016 Record: 42-22 (24-6 Southland)
2016 Finish: Lafayette Regional

After starting the season slow with an 0-5 record Sam Houston State caught fire down the stretch, going 24-6 over the final two months and claimed both the regular season and conference tournament championships in the competitive Southland Conference, only to lose twice to eventual CWS runner-up Arizona in the Lafayette Regional. Many of the players that guided them to that success return including seven of their top eight hitters. One of those hitters is do-it-all leadoff threat Bryce Johnson, who hit 345-2-30 with 20 stolen bases and enters the 2017 season as a preseason favorite for Player of the Year in the conference. While there will be more new faces on the pitching staff they do return two of their top starters, righthanders Heath Donica and Riley Gossett, who combined to go 17-4 last year with ERAs of 3.42 and 2.64 respectively.
