Junior College Top 25: February 24

A year ago, Orange Coast College held off a determined San Joaquin Delta club in the state championship game to become the first California school to finish atop Perfect Game’s ranking of the nation’s top junior colleges. The Mustangs hope to improve on their second-place finish this spring and become the second straight California JC to turn the trick.

At 14-0, San Joaquin Delta has been perfect in the early going, and ascended to No. 1 in PG’s latest junior-college ranking after being ranked No. 2 two weeks ago. The Mustangs, who won a California state title in 2011, jumped over Florida’s St. Johns River (25-5) to claim the top spot.

Delta’s obvious strength is its three-man rotation of freshman lefthander Cameron Avila-Leeper (5-0, 1.95), a 29
th-round pick of the Minnesota Twins in the 2014 draft; red-shirt freshman Dean Kremer (4-0, 2.87), a Nevada-Las Vegas recruit, and sophomore righthander Ricky Delgado (4-0, 1.50), who began his career at Cal State Fullerton in 2012. The Monarchs have posted a 2.00 team ERA to date.

As expected, the team’s best everyday player has been sophomore catcher Collin Theroux, an Oklahoma State recruit who has excelled on both sides of the ball. He leads the team in homers (5) and RBIs (15), while hitting .283.

Even with a change at the top, PG’s latest junior-college rankings remained relatively unchanged. Three new teams cracked the top 25, led by Weatherford (Texas), which has rolled out to a 16-1 start, and jumped all the way to No. 6. Alvin (Texas) and a second 14-0 team, Cowley County (Kan.), also are new.
